COFFEE TALK

Moka Pot, Top and Bottom Parts

In our previous issue, we explored the basics of beginning your journey as a coffee hobbyist. This week, we venture deeper into the world of coffee brewing with the beloved Moka Pot method, favored by Italians who are renowned for their passion for coffee.

With its signature octagonal shape and unique brewing process, the Moka Pot was invented by Bialetti and has become a staple in many Italian homes.

It applies pressure to extract the flavors from medium fine ground coffee beans, producing a rich brew that sits between an espresso and an americano in terms of intensity.

The resulting coffee offers a delightful mouthfeel, satisfying taste buds of coffee lovers. So, if you're looking for a new way to enjoy your morning cup of joe, give the Moka Pot a try and experience coffee the traditional Italian way.

I like the compact size which is perfect for home and traveling. The preparation and clean-up afterwards is also simple. If you’re looking into espresso, I recommend that you try this first.

Moka Pots are not too costly and will give you an idea if espresso is for you. If you’ve ever had a Lungo, this is as close to it as I can think.

It’ll be part of my coffee brewing methods for sure and will definitely travel with me on trips. It’s a winner, but then again, I like my coffee strong.

Selecting the Right Coffee

For the best results, use coffee grounds that are slightly finer than those for drip or filter coffee but coarser than espresso grounds. Starbucks Caffe Verona is an example, but many other brands will also work well.

Check the coffee bag to see if the grind size is suitable. Some coffee bags even have a small image of a Moka Pot on back.

How to Brew with a Moka Pot

Fill the Base: Pour water into the base, stopping just below the safety valve. Avoid overfilling, as this can lead to a bitter, burnt taste.

Insert the Funnel: Place the funnel in the base.

Add Coffee: Loosely fill the funnel with medium-fine ground coffee. Avoid tamping the coffee down and remove any grounds on the funnel's edge.

Fill The Funnel with Coffee Grounds

Assemble the Pot: Screw the top section firmly to the base without using the handle for leverage.

Tighten: Ensure the upper and lower halves are tightly secured.

Heat: Place the Moka Pot on low to medium heat. For induction cooktops, use low settings to avoid overheating. On gas stoves, adjust the flame to prevent it from climbing up the pot’s sides.

Brew: It takes 3-6 minutes for the coffee to brew, depending on the pot size and heat intensity. Remove from heat as soon as the pot is full to avoid burning the coffee. The brewed coffee should run down like a cascade and afterwards bubbles will form, at this point remove it from the heat.

Serve: Stir the coffee gently before pouring.

Enjoy your rich, flavorful coffee brewed with the classic Moka Pot! 🙂

COFFEE NEWS

Economy: Rising Coffee Prices a Rude Awakening for U.S Consumers

U.S. consumers are facing higher coffee prices due to production challenges in key coffee-growing regions and increased global demand.

Since January 2021, imported coffee prices have surged by 65%, leading to a 20% increase in ground coffee prices for consumers since April 2023.

These high prices are expected to persist as production struggles to meet demand. As a result, consumers may shift from frequenting coffee shops to enhancing their at-home coffee experience with store-bought flavorings.

Health: US Study Links Extended Sitting and Lack of Coffee to Higher Death Rates.

The study found that prolonged sitting increases the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, especially in those not meeting recommended physical activity levels.

However, higher coffee consumption was associated with lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The risk was significantly higher for non-coffee drinkers sitting more than six hours daily.
